Welcome to my new column H of the Month – a monthly wrap-up featuring great hotels, hostels, homestays, holiday rentals and more where I’ve had the pleasure of checking into. Every month, I’ll give you the inside scoop on some of the best accommodation options around the world and for every budget. Check it out and check in!
If you’re familiar with the site, you know I often opt to travel internationally and very rarely discover what’s in my own backyard – CANADA! Well folks, times are changing and I’ve decided to start packing the overnight bag and exploring the nearby attractions of my home and native land. There are a ton of hidden gems and popular hotspots which I can’t wait to share with you.
A few weeks ago, I made a short visit to Niagara Falls. It was an impromptu overnight trip where I was invited to experience the newly renovated Courtyard by Marriott, located at 5950 Victoria Avenue, smack dab in the heart of Niagara Falls, Ontario.
The city of Niagara Falls is just a short drive (under 2 hours) from Canada’s largest metropolis and my home, Toronto. The border-town destination is a must-see stop for many international travellers to Canada and it makes for a great weekend escape for Canadian families, couples and friends (hello bachelorette parties!).
The falls itself are worth the drive – but the Niagara region also offers plenty of activities, including beautiful wineries, wacky museums, wild nightlife and yummy dining options. If you’re looking for a place to check in, why not check out the Courtyard by Marriott.
There are a variety of rooms available from Standard Guestrooms to larger Family Suites. The newly renovated interiors are way beyond boring beige and feature a mixture of textures and patterns that pop. The red colour palette is a show-stopper. In my books, it’s better to be bold than boring – especially in an area bursting at the seams with lodging options.
I stayed in the Courtyard’s Junior Presidential Suite – featuring a comfy king-sized bed, sofabed, luxurious whirlpool jacuzzi and cozy fireplace ($170CAD/night). If I were going up with a group of gals or family, I’d definitely book the 1 bedroom, 2 room suite – which sleeps up to 6 people. At $200CAD/night, it’s a real deal ($33 each!) to be within walking distance to the falls and Clifton Hill with all its touristy glory (bars, restaurants, casinos and more). No worries folks – if you’re not keen on walking, the hotel provides regular shuttle service.
The hotel features a modern lobby and informative tour desk. There’s even a nifty interactive screen for guests to use detailing the weather, local events, news and nearby Points of Interest. I also loved the indoor/outdoor pool combo with sauna and attached gym. The in-room free WiFi is a bonus for bloggers & business people, too.
Besides the room, my second favourite feature of the Courtyard is the attached Keg Restaurant & Bar. Not only is it super convenient for families, but also for groups of friends before a night out – pop down, gorge yourself on juicy steaks and then go up to your room and get ready for a night on the town. Like the hotel, the Keg was also totally revamped and I enjoyed the intimate corners and spacious dining section. Most importantly, the food is fabulous – as always.
I hope you enjoyed the inaugural H of the Month post! Check back every month for the inside scoop on some of my favourite stays.
